Lil Dee Has A Message for Church Hoes and it’s Nothing Nice

Known for pushing the envelope with his confrontational lyrical offerings, Lil Dee releases his latest single Church Hoes. The title inspires a variety of images of
what one may expect to hear in a track with such a provocative name. Just the mention of Church Hoes could cause an emotional reaction from the church goer to the low down dirty heathen, a powerful factor due to the title’s ability to spark curiosity from a wide audience of listeners. The song starts out with a subtle chant that leads into a crescendo of regal instrumentation. Once the chorus comes in, the listener realizes that what they imagined Church Hoes to be is quite different from Lil Dee’s interpretation.

Lil Dee’s lyrical expressions aren’t for the faint hearted as he continues his mission to challenge black people to question what they were taught about religion among other prevalent points of discussion in today’s society, and to use common sense. A one versed lyrical assault, Lil Dee spews warning after warning to all Church Hoes with lyrics such as:

“Trying to leave me with no pot to piss in / An Eye for an Eye, I don’t fuck with Christians / When I catch up to ya I’ma give you the business” and “Where the work go, you a church hoe / leave you face down in the dirt bro.” When addressing the ills in society the message isn’t always going to be nice and Lil Dee has no qualms about bringing the unpleasantry.

INTERVIEW

#1 Thanks for taking the time to do this interview Vonairs. Tell us a bit about yourself,
your name, age, where you're from and an interesting fact if you like...

We're two swedish guys, Petter and Elias, in our early twenties who loves to play and produce
housemusic. we live for it. At the moment we live i Stockholm, Sweden, most of the time in our
studio (haha). When we're not in the studio we spend time on the nightclubs or at the gym, gotta
work on them biceps for all the fistpumping done on stage.

#2 -Is there a story behind your name Vonairs?

Not really, when we decided to start produce housemusic together I (Elias) just thought of a
catchy band-name and Vonairs crossed my mind pretty quick. Petter and the other guys in the
crew liked it and here we are now. I think it's cool. Vonairs is like ”viktory on air”.

#3 -How long have you been a band?

Since March 2013.

#4 -What first got you interested in forming housemusic-duo?

I (Petter) think it was around 2008 when I first heard "555" with Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve
Angello and was completely stoked. Yeah, around that year for me (Elias) too. We have always
been interested in music overall but it's just something special with housemusic, it's so
motivating, every song can mean so much in different ways to the croud, so much energy.

#5 -What/who inspires your music?

The feeling when you making a melody/song from head to reality is magic. And when people
around you confirmes that its a great melody/song, something that you, together, made from
your mind... Probably on of the best feelings you can get.

#6 -Do you see being in a band as a career, or as a hobby?

Vonairs is definitely our carrier together.

#7 -What are you trying to do with your music? Do you want to help your community?
Are you trying to get rich? What is your goal for your music?

Housemusic is what we love, we want to deliver great housemusic to the world, that is what we
live for. Of couse we want to be able to provide our selfes on the music we create, but rich
should just be a bonus.

#8 -Have you ever performed live? How did it feel?

ROSE Nightclub , one of the biggest and crowdiest in Stockholm, crazy gig with a great crowd.
We droped our upcoming track Fucamo and the reaction from the people in the crowd were
great. Hard to describe who great that felt.

#9 -Do you have any kind of management, publishing or distribution team behind you? If
so what are their responsibilities?

Yeah, we have a crew behind us doing management and many things more. We're a really
good team, both as friends and as colleagues.

#10 -What are some accomplishments that you have achieved, and are most proud of?

I think we're most proud of the to upcoming tracks we're soon releasing, PITA and Fucamo.

#11 -What one tip would you give to other aspiring independent artists?

Just work hard, believe in yourself and don't give up, it's a bumpy ride even for Tiesto
sometimes!

Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects - Counterclockwise

If you ever wanted to make a list of Ivan Mihaljevic’s achievements, you’d need at least half a dozen post-it notes. From opening for The Scorpions and The Cult with (hard rockers) Hard Time and sharing the stage with Les Paul in New York, to working on instructional ‘how to play’ guitar videos and a job in musical theatre, to say he’s been busy would be a huge understatement.

Somehow, he’s found time for a third full-length outing with power rock trio Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects, completed by Majkl Jagunic and Alen Frljak on bass and drum duties, respectively. Can it be added to that ever-growing list of merits?

On the surface, it may not be reinventing or twisting any of rock’s golden rules, but this isn’t an issue as it isn’t trying to. Counterclockwise is fully aware of its ballsy influences and respects these, whilst leaving room for some atmospheric vocal hooks.

The well-rounded tone of ‘Too Much Is Not Enough’ is initially comforting, but this quickly melts into the rifftastic groove of ‘Build Your Destiny’ and the record kicks off. By sheer contrast, closing track ‘I Am’ feels like the end of something, with its lyrical stance on individualism and eye on both the past and future.

The keyword - for the album’s first half at least - is balance. Mihaljevic can shred at rocket-speed, but he knows where to place this within a greater melodic frame and holds back when necessary. Jagunic and Frljak know they can explore audacious paths, but they’re also able to maintain the rhythmic unity that drives each song.

Indeed, A lot of the time, the music literally does the talking. The band indulge in extended musical passages for lengthy durations, but this is where the musicianship flourishes.

The exotic verve of ‘Driving Force’ is bound to get heads bopping, whereas the hypnotic click track on ‘Gilded Cage’ creates intimacy. The music never fails to produce ambiance that captures one’s mentality.

‘Eclipse’ is undoubtedly the record’s standout track. The inclusion of a string section brings an air of fantasy and mystique, but when the vocals enter it’s dragged to a level field with the album’s other tracks. That said, it’s not hard to feel immersed in the music and it’s the kind of rock that you’ve always imagined yourself playing. Just not for 12 minutes.

Counterclockwise’s vast instrumentality and stratospheric vocals are ideal supplements for long journeys and those times when we need to feel bigger than ourselves. Encouraging but with a firm grip on its own identity, it’s sure to mesmerise lovers of rock music and make a great addition to their collections.

J. Jackson: “Truth Be Told”

 

Detroit, MI- Lyricist extraordinaire, J. Jackson, is hard at work on his debut project. While Jackson is not giving us any clues about the project’s title or release date other than this summer, the content being delivered is undeniable. To further whet the appetites of his audience, Jackson is releasing behind the scenes footage of the recording of his latest offering “Truth Be Told”.

 “Truth Be Told” is produced by Chanes, a beat-smith who has worked closely with Shady/Aftermath as well as J. Jackson. The yet to be released track serves as a classic vent session that capsulizes the time of its recording. J. Jackson gives the listener an insight of his twenty-some-odd years shifting frantically from vague to liberal detail in roughly two minutes. What isn’t said outright in the lyrics, is still communicated in Jackson’s delivery that is simultaneously paced and urgent.

 “Truth Be Told” is only the beginning for J. Jackson as he is hard at work, preparing to release a mix-tape this summer as well as an official EP. Lil Dee: “The Lions Den” Stories Of Struggles, Injustice And Real Issues!

On the 10th of February 1925, a great man penned his well known “First Message to the Negroes of the World From Atlanta Prison”, wherein he made his famous proclamation: “Look for me in the whirlwind or the storm, look for me all around you, for, with God’s grace, I shall come and bring with me countless millions of black slaves who have died in America and the West Indies and the millions in Africa to aid you in the fight for Liberty, Freedom and Life.”

That man was Marcus Garvey. A Jamaican political leader and orator who was a staunch proponent of the Black nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements. Garveyism inspired others, ranging from the Nation of Islam to the Rastafari movement, which proclaims Garvey as a prophet. It’s a shame so few people remember or even know about Marcus Garvey and the Black Star Line, today. Before Martin and Malcolm ever made their marks, there was Marcus.

Lil Dee is one of the very few new rappers out there that seem to be tracing Marcus Garvey’s footsteps with pride and integrity. This is a real man that has something to say about the world and doesn’t just rehash the same youth and gang struggles that mainstream rappers continually brandish to their fans.

Lil Dee tells stories of struggles, injustice and real issues that not a lot of rappers out there would even attempt to address nowadays. He also does it in such a clever fashion that it is undeniable that this emcee understands the world in a much broader sense than your average rapper. I will admit Lil Dee is not the easiest artist to listen to at times, his voice and personality takes some warming up to if you haven’t listened to his music before, but once you do, it is just smooth sailing from there on because this man is one of the best things to come out of the underground rap movement in quite a while.

Over at the Rapmonster.com website we stumbled across “The Lions Den,” an album by Lil Dee, that hosts a collection of 39 whopping tracks. “Liberty Or Death” which kicks off the fireworks, has an opening verse that reads:

“we have the greatest lost of people thru human history
niggers dont know about kemetic school of mystery
many people done lost their nation hood
alot of damn people have been conquered and abused
yet our lost was so great man its hard to recover
everytime i turn around we fighting each other
we opressed you my brother and we both suffering
the white man is to blame that aint up for discussion…”

Making it clear from the outset that Lil Dee, lays it down straight and doesn’t any cut corners in his messages. He raps with wit and conviction that propels as the album goes on. His flow is awesome, and he can easily switch up at almost any time with no sign of slack.

Once again, Lil Dee really knows how to paint vivid pictures filled with social commentary and real positive messages despite the use of explicit language on the occasion; but there is a lot of substance on this album and his lyrics are so thought provoking that the cursing is simply just in context.

The thing that makes Lil Dee and the album so great is because this is what real hip hop is supposed to be about. Nowadays you hear rappers exclusively rapping about stuff like cars, women and drugs. Rap music has become quite stale recently, but it’s albums like this that are keeping it alive. The Lions Den sends positive messages as opposed to talking about the futile stuff mentioned earlier and goes way beyond the beats.

Lil Dee is one of those unique artists that is really able to talk to the people and send a message about society in his raps.
